I love Disney's Sleeping Beauty and her stylized-medieval world. The architectural detail was inspired by "The Bedford Book of Hours", a 15th century English illuminated manuscript. Depicted are Prince Phillip, Princess Aurora, Maleficent and her loyal familiar (all owned by The Disney Co.). Hand drawn and painted using gouache.

Lovely work! :)
All that's missing is the gold leaf ;)
This is the best fanart I've seen of Sleeping Beauty. I love the stylized characters, and the backgrounds by Eyvind Earle, and you've recreated them so well here! And captured the dark quality of the film, as well as the sinister elegance of Maleficent. Love, love, love.

Wow! Thank you! I really tried to re-creative that gothic, 'dark' feel that dominated the film. Eyvind Earle did brilliant work for that movie.

Thank you! :) I was soooo tempted to add gold leaf, but my gilding skills are still a bit premature.

It's a fiddly, potentially messy job and the supplies are hard to find. I've been there ;)

But the gold paint works just fine :)
You succeeded well!

Have you seen any of his own work? I mean paintings he didn't do for Disney? They're absolutely amazing.

Yes, I've seen Eyvind Earle's other works. I don't know many other artists who can transform a landscape like he can. I admire his ability to capture textures almost photographically and then just paint in planes of darks and lights. He is one of my favorite artists, which is probably why I love Sleeping Beauty so much. :)
